Our trip to Bocas Del Toro, Panama provided us the unique opportunity to explore what cross-cultural health care looks like in a rural setting. The majority of our time was spent hosting a clinic in a rural town where we assisted physicians in providing birth control injections, de-worming medication, ultrasound for pregnant women to screen for complications, reading glasses, and health education. There was also plenty of time for team activities such as eating tasty food in Bocas Town, shopping, swimming in the river, and snorkeling! --Daniel Malouf (MECN Class of 2018)
GAIN joined Doctors Without Borders to present Forced From Home, a free interactive tour that took visitors behind the headlines of the global refugee crisis. Guided by experienced Doctors Without Borders aid workers, we traveled through a 10,000-square-foot space designed to convey the challenges facing a person forced to flee. We experienced a virtual reality and 360˚ video, and interacted with materials gathered from refugee camps, sea rescue missions, and emergency medical projects around the world. As we progressed through the stations, visitors got to experience the difficulty in leaving behind items that they departed home with, for example, medications, family photos, water, and cell phones. This was meant to simulate the experience refugees often have as they have to give up their personal items for different reasons such as in exchange for passage across a border.
The Los Angeles Global Health Conference is a conference that allows anyone interested in international health to come and explore current research and projects being undertaken, from work within the city and out of the country. As such, we felt incredibly lucky to be given the opportunity to be represent students and most importantly, the field of nursing through our student organization Global Action in Nursing. Throughout the event, we had opportunities to interact with researchers, physicians, nurses, graduate and undergraduate students. It was a day of innovation and networking to say the least, and definitely a day of partnership. Global Action in Nursing looks forward in creating these ties, and thus bringing a voice to global health, here at the School of Nursing.
Below are pictures of conference scholarship recipients that GAIN sponsored. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our bake sale! We plan to have more bake sales! We'll be sure to keep you posted. :)
